What is Swine Flu (H1N1) ?
The recent outbreak of Swine Flu disease in people caused by a new influenza virus of swine origin continues to grow in the United States and internationally. Swine Influenza (Swine Flu) is a respiratory disease of pigs caused by type A influenza viruses that causes regular outbreaks in pigs. People do not normally get Swine Flu, but human infections can and do happen.
What are the symptoms of swine flu in humans?
The symptoms of Swine Flu in people are expected to be similar to the symptoms of regular human seasonal influenza and include fever, lethargy, lack of appetite and coughing.
What You Can Do to Stay Healthy
- Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hands cleaners are also effective.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.
- Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
- Influenza is thought to spread mainly person-to-person through coughing or sneezing of infected people. If you get sick, the Center for Disease Control recommends that you stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.
